What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is the process of eradicating unwanted hairs from the face, underarms and other body parts by sending pulses of highly concentrated laser beams or laser lights to destroy the hair follicles. Selective photothermolysis (SPTL) is the key principle behind laser hair removal. It acts upon by matching a specific wavelength of light pulse for an optimal duration to attain the finest effect on a targeted tissue with minimal side –effects or damages to surrounding tissues. The laser light passes harmlessly through the skin and gets absorbed by a pigment called melanin found in the hair follicle. The heat from the laser destroys the root of the hair follicle, thus preventing further hair growth.
Benefits of Laser Hair Removal
Safe and Precise: Lasers can accurately target dark, coarse hairs while leaving the surrounding skin unscathed.
Speed: It takes just a fraction of a second for each laser pulse to treat multiple hairs in unison. The laser can treat a particular area in approximately a quarter of a second. Small areas such as the upper lip can be treated in less than a minute.
Gender Neutrality: Laser Hair Removal techniques can be used in both men and women to remove undesirable hair. Amongst men, bodybuilders, swimmers, models and actors mostly prefer this procedure.
Predictability: Unwanted hair can be removed permanently after an average of five sessions.
Laser Hair Removal Procedure:
A comprehensive pre-treatment assessment is performed. Evaluation for any skin problems, active infections, allergies and tattoos in the area to be lased are considered thoroughly before laser treatment. Laser hair removal is contraindicated during pregnancy. An active check for any hormonal imbalance is also done and adequate medications would be prescribed along with the laser treatment if a recognized hormonal problem is found. During the comprehensive assessment prior to the treatment, the area for hair removal is studied for the colour, surface texture and thickness of the hair. This helps in the personalization of the laser parameters that suit you best. Thicker the hair, better and faster is the reduction. All other forms of hair removal treatment other than for regular shaving must be avoided for the entire treatment duration period of 6-8 months or until the laser treatment sessions are completed. Your doctor will give the instructions best suited for you, and you need to heed those recommendations.
Side Effects of Laser Hair Removal:
The common side effects include redness, burning of the skin, irritation, swelling, pricking sensations and scarring. A cool compression and moisturizers could be beneficial in minimizing the discomfort caused.
